Integrating the latest information obtained from basic and clinical research into patient care that is supportive and compassionate is the guiding principle in providing state-of-the-art eye care. My training at Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York City established this principle in my medical education. The residency training at the Duke University Eye Center focused this principle in the area of ophthalmic patient care. My two year fellowship training at Harvard Medical School and the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary in cornea and external eye disease allowed me to combine clinical care and research in corneal disease to refine my specialization. Having served on the faculty of Duke University Eye Center for seventeen years and on the faculty of the University of Pittsburgh for the last seven years has permitted me to develop special interest and skills in treating diseases of the surface of the eye, including dry eye disease. I continue to conduct clinical research in dry eye therapy and rehabilitation of the cornea by medical and surgical care. Translating the advances of clinical research into compassionate clinical care remains my goal.
